Statement of Purpose

My academic work combines my background as a senior executive in marketing management with quantitative research on student attitudes, to create real-world, career-building experiences for Elmira College studenadts. These experiences include regional and international fieldwork involving leading businesses, guest speakers, and team projects.

I have received a number of awards and honors ranging from a national best paper award in marketing to student recognition as evidenced by consistent top student ratings. I have established a national research and publishing platform. I am a firm believer in developing the potential of students by making education fun, collaborative, and directly applicable to a successful career.

Academic and Leadership Experience

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MARKETING
Elmira College, Elmira, New York, 2003 – present

  • Business courses taught include Business to Business Marketing, Entrepreneurship, International Business Seminar, International Marketing, Marketing Principles, Marketing Research, Marketing Planning, Sales Principles, Sales Management, Strategic Retailing Management, and Directed Study Marketing Courses (Qualitative Research, Focus Groups, Fundraising, and Public Relations)
  • Developed and taught the Habitat for Humanity course in 2005, providing students with organized HFH field trips to Robbins TN, Greenville MS, and Avon Park FL, to assist in building homes for need-stricken areas.
  • Co-instructed a six-week humanities travel course to the United Kingdom from 2006 to 2009. Introduced students to the historical, political, economic, artistic, literary, cultural, and educational environment of the country, through a multi-dimensional focus on developments between 1783 and the present day. Students were exposed to British institutions, such as Parliament, the City of London, Oxford University, major museums, and architecture.
  • Received recognition and pubic relations press releases for community course work in numerous courses: Strategic Retailing Management, Business-to-Business Marketing, International Marketing, and Marketing Planning.
  • Developed student-business consulting projects with local area organizations including the National Warplane Museum, Trace Paper Artwork, Chemung ARC, Red Newt Cellars Inc., Greater Corning Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, and invited numerous guest speakers from local and national businesses.

COMMERCIAL SALES/MARKETING
Steuben Glass, Corning Incorporated, Corning & New York City, New York, April 2001- April 2003

  • Responsible for the management of the Sales Department for Steuben’s Corning Retail, the NYC Flagship on Madison Avenue in NYC, the Direct Marketing Department, the eCommerce Department (Steuben.com), Corporate Department, and the Regional/Wholesale Accounts (62 stores).
  • Streamlined and re-launched a new direct marketing plan that resulted in a 37% increase after three months. Responsible for the management of a $25 million sales budget and served as manager of the profit and loss (P&L) of the entire commercial business.
  • Implemented, managed and coordinated 22 new regional store openings in 2002.
  • Led promotional, public relations, and training activities for the organization, including new product lines, new corporate phone system, detailed catalog analysis, and first official sales training program, receiving a company award for the latter.

DIRECT MARKETING
Steuben Glass, Corning Incorporated, Corning & New York City, New York, June 2000 – April 2001

  • Managed, marketed, and promoted the Direct Marketing department operations for Steuben. Responsible for the profit and loss (P&L) of $2.5M operation and for the entire marketing effort and fulfillment of the Steuben Direct Marketing initiatives, e.g. catalogs, postcards, etc.

REGIONAL DIRECTOR, Tri-State Region
Kaplan Incorporated, New York, New York, December 1999 – June 2000

  • Managed, marketed, and promoted operations for the Tri-State Region, including 21 centers in the states of NY, NJ, and CT, having total revenues of more than $30 million/year, together with leading the marketing, academic, and sales departments.
  • Oversaw hiring, training, human resources, and customer service operations, managing 200 full-time and 500 part-time employees and overseeing a $2.5M/year marketing budget.

GENERAL MANAGER, Upstate New York
Kaplan Educational Center, New York, New York, 1995- February 2000

  • Managed, marketed and promoted operations for Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Ithaca, Rochester, Syracuse, and Troy centers, including top five revenue-producing centers in the Tri-State region. Created first community outreach program and oversaw national launch of first college representative program. Managed 20 full-time and over 200 part-time employees.
